Antacids/Anti Ulcerants

These drugs are used to treat or prevent peptic ulcer disease and other disorders associated with gastric hyperacidity. Gastric hyperacidity and peptic ulcer occur when there is a high or increased secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach more than what the mucosa of the stomach or duodenum can withstand. The mode of action of these drugs is either anti-secretary (i.e. they reduce gastric acid secretion) or cytoprotective having gastric mucosal protectant actions.

Antacids are preparations with acid neutralizing and buffering activity. They are useful in treating gastric conditions associated with hyperacidity. In such conditions, Antacids are used to reduce the effect of the hyperacidity by neutralizing the excess acid output and thereby prevent / relief pain and other discomforts associated with gastric hyperacidity.Antacids are often used for symptomatic treatment of both ulcer and non-ulcer dyspepsia, and in reflux oesophagitis.

Antacid preparations may contain an Antifoaming agent such as Simeticone added in combination to provide symptomatic relieve from flatulence which is commonly associated with gastric hyperacidity conditions.
